(CSULA-UT) A woman is convicted of misdemeanor child abuse with hot sauceJessica Beagley, a 37 year old mother from Anchorage, Alaska was convicted Tuesday August 23, of misdemeanor child abuse of her adopted 7 year-old Russian son and could potentially face one year in jail, up to 10 years of probation, and a fine of $10,000. Prosecutors in the case say the woman’s actions, which she recorded, were a stunt meant to get her on the popular TV show “Dr. Phil.”
Shown during the trial was the videotape Beagley recorded for the TV depicting how she punishes the boy. Beagley can be seen yelling at the visibly distraught boy before tilting his head back and pouring hot sauce into his mouth. Another segment shows Beagley punishing the boy by making him stand in a cold shower.
Prosecutor Cynthia Franklin said to the jury in her closing argument, "There is no reason in the world why someone has to hurt a child to get on a reality show."
Her husband, Gary Beagley, an Anchorage police officer, was with her during the Tuesday hearing. According to accounts at the scene, both showed little to no emotion as the jury announced its guilty verdict. Once the hearing ended, the couple rushed out of the courtroom without answering any of the questions coming from reporters.
Defense attorney William Ingaldson said in an article published by the Associated Press that he will request that she not serve any jail time.
